For everyone and no one

I remember having a terrible dream about 5 years ago,
and in it I saw you get hit by a car,
and I ran over to help but you died in my arms!
It was only a dream but I was miserable for weeks,
after that crazy dream,
you were such a big impact on my life,
and I've never forgotten about you.
But I always knew that you were not just what you say to me,
and I wasn't the only moment you were made of.
I could never forget you.
And never will.
But life goes on.
And life has a funny way of helping you out,
or blowing up in your face!
I'm trying not to dwell on things,
but how can you try to forget the past,
when its responsible for what you are now?
All I've learnt from it is that I'm the proverbial,
door mat of the universe,
letting people walk over me and keep smiling as they do so.
I'm just not selfish enough to say no.
Its not who I am.
I've had to change myself so many times in my life,
that I'm not sure what i am anymore.
I just put on a smile so no one can see my inner turmoil,
and the monsters that feast on my soul,
gnawing on my insecurities,
opening old wounds and letting infection set in!
