Judges Comments:
An excellent example of what this contest is all about. The biting, judgmental voice, the self posturing throughout, would be enough. But you have chosen to start off making your point by using the unforgivable vehicle of the handicapped, crossing over all lines of societal decency. "the incontinent, the catatonic with soiled bottoms, the slobbering fringe." Mean, mean, mean. Even babies aren't exempt before this poem is done. You make the reader uncomfortable with such contempt and arrogance. But there is more to this poem. There is the suppressed truth that is both subtle and energetic, the truth that we are open-minded only if the other person agrees with us, if WE deem them as having worth. And that leaves the reader wondering, "Will I make the cut?" Excellent poem. Congratulations.
This poem has a wry brilliance to it and a cutting wit.The curmudgeon-like voice is written in the manner of Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents. . . .” At the same time, the poet is able to have fun and share their exuberance with the reader. This poem may be more overt in its mean spiritedness than some of the subtler examples given in Tony Hoagland’s essay on “mean poetry” that we referenced in issuing the challenge but it is a fine work nonetheless and shows the range of possibilities of poems written with such an edge.
The sardonic voice here is well-maintained throughout---though the overall parodic tone threatens to undermine (at times) the object of ridicule. The first 9 lines read so smoothly that it's easy to miss how sly the hand is here, beginning with something that many people probably would be uncomfortable with, sitting next to "catatonics with soiled bottoms", but then quickly moving (much as society has a tendency to do, in the same sort of case) to anyone who might subvert order, to instill a regime of "norms," etc. Though I think the tone slips, occasionally, into self-righteousness, the poem is nevertheless an excellent example of how "cutting" and "critical" poetry can be.

AUGUST 2003 NEWS
Mustansir Dalvi's poem "edge" is published in MiPo Best of HeadQuarters 2003, August 2003
Editorial Comments by Mia, Birch and Koromilas:
"There are two stories here, in Mustansir Dalvi's "Edge"; two difficult relationships - husband and wife, parents and child - and both are uncomfortable, both are edgy, sharp like a knife. The sharp edge of a letter opener becomes the muted symbol of communication within this family: the child clutches it; the mother snatches it away and the father retrieves it, again. In writing, Dalvi's method is like the archaeologist's. While the archaeologist silently unearths entire cities under our modern ones, Dalvi unravels the layers of our very own human psyche. He takes a situation - here, how to parent an autistic child - and digs and digs deep into what we all know is lurking there within us, but can't articulate. Well, Dalvi can and does."
